Whar’s so fashionable about flip-flops? Why do they cost a lot?

 sany18081

I honestly can’t see the reason for the exorbitant prices attached to flip-flops. They are comfortable, yes. But fashionable? Heck, no! But some people (a lot!) think they are so much so that they are willing to shell out hundreds, even a thousand bucks, for flip-flops. Oh well, to each his own…

Yet… I actually tried to buy a “tsinelas” - that’s what they are. LOL. - to have a feel of what the majority feels when they go around town - malls, restos, cinemas - wearing one. I ended up confident that tsinelas - flip-flops or whatever you call them - aren’t for me.

I need a new pair of running shoes. My dependable Nike needs a replacement especially now that I am once again actively going to the gym. I checked on Shopwiki for running shoes and found some useful tips on how to choose well. I am not into outdoor running - I’m almost exclusively just into treadmill - but for those into trail running, there are really good trail running shoes to choose from from this site.

I once joined the mountaineers in one of their climbs in college. I was repeatedly reminded not to bring any cosmetics. LOL. I didn’t have to buy my mountainering gears then so somebody had to lend me her hiking boots. It was not so comfortable. I learned my lesson. Shoes are something that I should choose well and hiking boots are very important as one traverses unknown mountain trails.

Shopwiki is not just limited to athletic shoes. It’s good to search the site for all kinds of men and women’s shoes. One can also check out their shoes buying guide and learn a lesson or two from it. Sometimes, it helps to be resourceful before spending:-).

Korean beauty product invasion:

I am not a fan nor a user. I haven’t bought any Skin Food product even in Seoul but it’s just interesting to see a familiar store in Seoul here in Iloilo.

What’s with perfumes and colognes that make us choosy and crave for those which appeals to our senses? With so many fragrances to choose from, it is good to know that we have Fragrances Buying Guides to help us determine which is best for us. But of course, that does not mean that we have to limit ourselves to one scent everyday for all occasions.

Take for example perfumes. It could not only go with the occasion but with our varying moods, as well. There are five categories of perfume classification and we could play with them to allow our own personality to surface. It’s also exciting to pick up which perfume to use for every occasion. As there are new fragrances every now and then, Shopwiki is a good site to check for new releases. This keeps the perfume and cologne lover updated without having to go out and check on all the stores.

I personally do not like strong-smelling colognes on men. A man whose presence is announced by his strong scent is a total turn-off. I hope some men would take note of some tips on how to choose and wear cologne. Believe me, you would be doing a great service to mankind! Better yet, check out these Award-Winning Fragrances.

But, of course, not everyone would want to be pressured into checking and buying any of these award-winning fragrances. There are classic colognes for men and classic perfumes for women. They are timeless and they have been tried and tested.

So, at the end of the day, one’s scent is a personal choice. It’s just a matter of choosing which one is the best for your own body. Like accessories and clothes, it’s being comfortable in your own skin which makes you the man or the woman that you are!

One of the must-haves during summer is a pair of sunglasses. While it protects your eyes, it also serves as a fashionable accessory. You just need to make sure that you have the perfect shade and a good design to complement your different looks. Unless you are one who can afford several sunglasses, then you don’t have to meticulously check on all the designs before you purchase one. I say, lucky you!

I actually have difficulty in choosing a good sunglass frame for me. I highly recommend these guidelines in finding out which sunglass would look good on your kind of face and skin color. You have to check first what is the shape of your face. From there, you can choose among the list which frame shape is good for you. Of course, the lens color of the sunglass is essential. I know for a fact that black is not good on me. I chose brown for myself. Interestingly, we have to consider our skin, eyes and skin color to determine the best lens color for us.

One of the classic fashionable designs I have always loved on women is the Jackie O sunglasses. Unfortunately, this design is not for all types of faces. Even if I want to have one, it doesn’t look good on me. Big disappointment, really! But I still love watching other women who can carry the style very well.

Even in sunglasses, there are fashion victims. It’s best to watch out and choose what’s best for you!

bayong1I don’t know about the Western culture but I read and heard a lot of stories of discrimination, based on how you dress and how you look, from where I came from. The most popular story being told and being passed on to generations in the hope of teaching a lesson is that of  a man from the province, dressed as a typical provincial lad, carrying a bayong (a handwoven native bag). He went to the city and entered several banks but he was not entertained. The last bank he went to entertained him and the officer was surprised to discover that the bayong actually contained money. The money was from his harvest and he was actually a rich man from the province. I am not really a good story-teller but I hope I delivered the lesson behind the story.

Of course, it is not an everyday occurrence but I am sure not one of us can say that we have not been guilty of judging a person by how he looks. It is human nature, I guess. We tend to give more attention to those who dress well and look good.

It is a reality and there is no sense in getting angry over the fact that Filipinos are all-over the world doing menial jobs. We have been subjects of joke over that fact and overly-sensitive Filipinos are prompt in their negative response. Generally though, Filipinos doing these menial jobs are highly-regarded.That, to me, is very important and speaks a lot about the value of hard work.

Sadly, because of this, it is easy to generalize that Filipinos working abroad work as domestic helpers, construction and factory workers, etc. What of the professionals?

A Filipino expat here in Seoul had a story to tell over coffee. He was travelling with his British counterparts. The Brits were dressing casually while he had a suit on. He was asked why. In his mind, he had to say, “That’s because you are not Filipinos!”. Sad but true. Dress casually and most of the time you will not be given the kind of attention you will be given when you are in a suit.

We don’t have to look too far. Even in our own country (the Philippines), the difference in the attention one gets based on how he looks  happens… frequently. And most often, it isn’t about how much money you have in your pocket or in your bank account. It is about the aura you exude… and the amount of respect you can command.

Power dressing is important in this superficial (oh yeah, no sense in denying it) world. I don’t take it against people who value how they look in public. Others may have a different perspective. But working in a corporate environment for eight years before I settled into my current domesticated life, this lesson was well-received.

I am not an expert in make-ups and my wardrobe does not consist of the latest trends but I don’t hide the fact that I have a penchant for dressing up and wearing make-up. Others may smirk and even theorize that people who can’t go out of their house without make-up on are insecure. LOL. For me, that’s just the most insecure excuse I have heard. You can always say that you are not comfortable in wearing make-up but theorizing about the insecurity of another is another matter:-).

Others may claim that you dress up so you cannot be associated with the “lower class”. That’s just the most pathetic comment, so far… and so narrow-minded.

Every morning, I think about what to wear for the day. I don’t think about me being a wife or a mother. I am Me and I dress up according to how I feel… and how I will feel. Donna Karan says it well “Power dressing is now designed to let the woman inside us come through”.

Going out with Cathy and Joanna yesterday afternoon reinforced my observation that Seoul is one fashionable place. If you like dressing up and expressing yourself through your clothes, come over. Seoul is a haven!

I’m not a fashionista but I do love dressing up. When I first came over three years ago, I was taken by the clothes the women wear. And they wear their clothes without fear! I adore that.

Of course, seeing the women in high heels while climbing the steep Namsan Tower and biking (yes!) in Yeouido are sources of a good laugh but these did not stop me from admiring how they dress up. Seoul Fashion happens to be one of the things I love about Seoul.

Anyway, Saturday was a “ME” time so I met up with Cathy and Joanna in Hongdae (the shopping area around Hongik University). I had been wanting to buy some comfortable shoes. I ended up buying a pair of shoes and a jumper. I sooo look forward to a bigger tummy when I could justify wearing my new jumper:-). It isn’t actually a maternity jumper but it seem to look good and comfortable when my tummy really starts showing. Anyway, the jumper is designed to look and feel comfy… you could convert it to a maternity jumper. Even during my first pregnancy, I didn’t really own (and refused to own) maternity clothes. Until my 39th week (Little Dynamo was born 39 weeks and 1 day), I was wearing regular clothes. Some just ended looking like maternity clothes. LOL. I plan to do the same this time.

While we were walking around, we could only gaze at the women fashionably dressed. Cathy told us of a visiting friend from the US who didn’t buy clothes here in Seoul. She liked the clothes but she knows she can’t wear them in the US. A male Australian classmate in Hangeul class three years ago remarked how “Korean women redefine the word ‘casual‘”. I totally agree. During our afternoon shopping in Hongdae, party clothes are casually donned.

When spring clothes started coming out, streets became a runway (ok, I’m a little bit exaggerating) again. I could only look with envy. These days, I am so limited to comfortable clothes (no tight jeans and skirts!).

Hubby knew I went home yesterday wanting for more. My “ME” time had a 6:30pm curfew. He was to have dinner to entertain his Italian colleagues who are still here in Seoul. Today, he got me to choose another pair of shoes. I can’t resist buying another blouse:-).

He asked if I was tired. I answered, “Women never ever get tired from shopping“.

Women have all sorts of concerns… who doesn’t? LOL… and the most visible cause of concern is the FACE. Lucky are those who didn’t go through the period of having pimples. Yikes, I did… grade 5, grade 6? Good thing I didn’t have to go through the acne problem. But for those who do, no worries. There’s this website on
Acne care products Review
which features various skin care products for different skin types.

Nothing wrong with being vain :-). After all,

“Vanity is so secure in the heart of man that everyone wants to be admired; even I who write this, and you who read this.” - Blaise Pascal quotes

My husband and I feel that it’s the right time to have another Little Dynamo. So, I am eagerly looking forward to another ten months of glorious pregnancy:-). I am quite lucky to have been spared of the stretch marks during my first pregnancy but I wouldn’t want to take anything for granted. This early, I think Beaute de  Maman would be one of my ego-boosters as soon as I go through the exciting ten months. Beaute de  Maman offers several health and beauty products especially designed for pregnant women. We have to take note, though, that pregnant women should not just use any product during the course of the pregnancy as a product could adversely affect the fetus inside. Products from this website were developed by a long-time Obstetrics and Gynecology practitioner, Dr. Michelle Brown, so I am personally not afraid to try them out. Some Hollywood moms-to-be are using the products. Check them out at the Beaute de  Maman website. Currently, the products available include Stretch Mark Cream, Face and Body Cream and Facial Scrub. Unfortunately, there are women whose face suffer from pimples due to hormonal changes during their pregnancy. Pray that I would not. I am also happy to see that the website also offers Nipple Gel for nursing moms. I breastfed my Little Dynamo for eighteen months. My experience makes me a stronger advocate for breastfeeding so I expect to do the same for our next one.

I am so eagerly waiting for that day when hubby and I would be gifted with the double line on our pregnancy kit test. I hope it will be sooner but I would like to  order now some of the products available but I guess I would have to settle with the facial scrub first. The others will have to follow:-)

I found an interesting site for women who love to stay sexy, slim and on the go. Skinny and the City offers tips on how to stay slim and fit without the usual obsession of counting the calories from the food you eat. More than the food, the website has a free newsletter where you can sign up to get recipe makeovers, restaurant reviews and ordering guides, nutrition tips and beauty and fashion advice. I like the Skinny Kitchen column where they feature “modified recipes”… modified to make those yummy dishes healthier:-)
