We were invited to a 7th birthday party last night.

A 7th birthday celebration is usually a big family affair here in the Philippines. For some, it is a very well-planned, well-organized affair. For a few, it is a grand celebration.  But how grand is grand turns out to be relative. Let me share with you the grandest 7th birthday celebration we have attended so far:

We came into the venue greeted by party organizers who checked our names in the guest list, handed our party money and lobby snack stubs and guided us through registration to getting the party souvenirs and pointed to us several kiosks for face painting, nail art, star wars TV station and the Star Wars designed lobby for photo opportunity.

There were different party souvenirs for adults and for kids. Kids were given personalized thermal bags with several laser toys inside:

Several food carts were stationed for the guests’ afternoon snacks. These are some of them:

The venue was filled with guests. The stage was spectacular. Food was flowing. Entertainment was anything but ordinary. Child celebrities from the two biggest networks graced the affair.

My Little Dynamo enjoyed the affair. He joined one of the games and didn’t want to leave the stage. He was dancing and enjoying his own laser sword while the birthday celebrant performed for his guests.

Ahhhh… it was not your ordinary party.

My internet always opens to the MSN homepage. Today, one of the headlines was “10 Companies  Hiring for the Holidays” and one of them was Toys” R” Us. This brings me back to a week ago when I took a picture of my Little Dynamo happily backpacking his toy purchase.

An afternoon in Clark last Sunday was not planned. Mother-in-law knocked in my room at 8:30 in the morning and informed me that we were going to Clark in a few hours. What were we going to do there? “Swimming or shopping, I don’t know“, she replied. “Just prepare“.

Little Dynamo was excited with the idea of going out with his cousin. We drove to Clark, Pampanga for one hour and half. We passed through SCTex (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) which provides a convenient and scenic road trip.

First stop in Clark was Fontana.

While the adults were excited about letting the children enjoy the swimming party, for my Little Dynamo nothing else matters but this:

Captain Hook is both a hero and a villain for him. He is awed and scared of him. He is drawn to him and yet he can’t go near him. How a child’s mind works…

This pirate ship provided a different idea of a pirate ship for him. A pirate ship is no longer scary. It is no longer a place where Wendy and John and Michael and the Lost Boys were about to be pushed into the gangplank.

A pirate ship is now a place where he can frolic under the gentle heat of the sun and splash around and slide down playfully without any fear.

We haven’t read Peter Pan again since the weekend. I wonder how he’ll react this time:-).

33 weeks today!!!

Exercise was not forgotten but was not a priority since my Little Dynamo underwent his laparoscopic surgery to correct his VUR. Travel followed after… from Seoul to HK Disneyland to Manila to Iloilo to Guimaras, back to Manila and now we’re settled here in Cabanatuan… awaiting the arrival of the Baby Dynamo.

I have had time to prepare for my own “ME” time. My needs are simple:-). Equipped with an exercise mat and a pair of dumb bells, my “ME” time is fulfilled first thing in the morning. Even before my son wakes up, I sweat my big-bellied self inside our room. It’s anything goes after that.

Today, at 33 weeks I am heavy at 58.6kg. Not bad… When I learned I was 6 weeks pregnant, I started at 51.8kg

Little Dynamo is settling magnificently. He has his own corner for relaxation. His definition of relaxation is sitting down in his own small blue chair, writing or drawing in his own small blue table and making up his own stories. His energy is consumed when he goes out to his Lola’s garden and run around. When cousins visit, he gets even more sweaty and stinky. But no matter, he is a happy boy! What more could a mom ask for?

While Little Dynamo and I were still in Iloilo last Thursday, hubby already informed me that the in-laws were planning to bring us to dinner at Golden Fortune in Binondo. I mentioned in an old post that we used to go to this restaurant because of its shabu-shabu and dimsum offerings. We usually go there at 9pm, in time for the food discounts.

Our flight schedule was perfect for the Thursday dinner. We left Iloilo at 6:15pm and arrived in Manila at 7:15pm. Driving towards Binondo in a convoy allowed us to arrive at the place as scheduled.

Our shabu-shabu was a little different this time. Brother-in-law ordered vegetables sparingly. Vegetables were very expensive, he explained. Typhoon Peping just left the country and vegetable supplies and prices were one of those affected. This didn’t dampen the dinner for the Little Dynamo. On the contrary, everyone on the table were only too happy to see him munching his boiled corn. When he declared he was full already, my Little Dynamo had a grand time watching the shrimps and several variety of fish on display, ready to be cooked upon order. My own idea of a relaxing dinner was also fulfilled. I could eat well, confident that my son was being taken good cared of by his titos or nanny.

Of course, going home wouldn’t be complete without the traditional take-out of dimsum sold at 50% discount beyond 9pm.

The night was almost just the way it was… just almost. Hubby wasn’t around.

Last Saturday’s trip to SM Megall was a reminder to never go to any of Megamall’s Mega Sale again. It was irritatingly over-crowded. After the children’s playtime at Dave’s Funhouse, in-laws and I were eager to go out of Megamall for dinner.

Sister-in-law’s restaurant choice was perfect! She introduced us to Amici, a pizza and pasta place in Greenhills.

While waiting for our food, youngest brother-in-law and his wife eagerly told me that Amici used to be in Don Bosco. It was bought and expanded by Red Ribbon veteran restaurateurs. The management has definitely done well just basing on the number of people eating and waiting for their turn to be seated. We waited for a few minutes before a table was cleared by another group satisfied by their dinner. When we left the place at around 9pm, the queue was still long.

The place caters to pizza and pasta lovers of all ages. Our own group had 4 active kids. I saw several groups with their own childen, too. Lolas (grandmothers) and Lolos (grandfathers) were around as well.

Aside from the pizza and pasta that children love (anyone knows of a child who doesn’t like pizza or pasta?), Amici has its own dessert place adjoining the restaurant called Cara Mia.

Cara Mia offers several variety of gelato. In-laws treated us to several gelato flavors of Sans Rival, Mint with Chocolate, Choco with Nuts and Banana. Yummy!

We went home fully satisfied with our dinner. The children had more than enough energy to still play a little more in the house while the adults were hoping for them to tire very soon for the entire house to have a restful sleep.

Being far away from family and relatives, I had been so used to doing things my way and scheduling our own family time. My son’s playtime, playmates, hobbies and habits are mostly my discretion.

Now that my son is of age to know what he wants and when he wants it, he takes pleasure in the attention he gets from family whom he knows adore him. He feels he can get away with anything and can take refuge from anyone against Mommy.

So, our daily routine since vacation starts with good morning kisses… then, “can I go out to play?” He absolutely loves it when I struggle in giving his daily vitamins. Whoever is in the house, he goes behind them, hides and pretends not to hear me! He especially delights whenever his Lolo Daddy is around whom he knows is always ready to take his side and gives in to his whims.

Mealtimes are mean to me as a Mom! My son would make all kinds of excuses not to eat… yet. But when I let his nanny feed him, he eats well. Whenever my father and my brother are with us during meal times, he is the most obedient and eager toddler to show them that he can eat on his own and he actually eats well. Then I would receive comments like my son can eat very well on his own, why does his mom always feed him? Grrrr!

On the rare times that we were alone in the house, I could actually let him eat well… after much crying from him hoping that he can watch TV while eating. It is plain torture whenever the whole family is in the house for dinner. I couldn’t turn off the television. My parents are set on their “teleserye” schedule that turning off the television would be declaring war. With the television on, my son would declare that he wants to watch his own good movie. Then, everyone would give in to him. This irks me so much! I’m lucky if my father would declare that the television be turned off. My son behaves and shows them how good an eater he is.

We are leaving tomorrow for Manila. It will be another set of family for him… his Dad’s side of the family. Another set of people to adore him… and pamper him… and hopefully spend as much time as they can with him. Who will he take refuge from this time?

Despite my jealousies, I am very happy to see my son enjoying not just Dad and Mom’s attention. He deserves his one month, or a few weeks, in a year with grandparents and uncles and aunts and cousins around him.

I grew up receiving mails personally. We didn’t have a mail box on our front gate so the post man would always personally hand any mail to me or to anyone who answers his call. When I started living in Manila and in a condominium, I started receiving mails and bills through the commercial mailboxes visibly and usually installed in the condomimium lobby. To this day, checking our mail box in our apartment in Seoul has become a daily habit.

But nothing beats the romance in seeing classic mail boxes in front of lawns or porches in the American movies and TV series I loved watching. Yes, for some reason, I have always thought mail boxes are romantic. They could either bring happy or tragic news… but romantic, nevertheless.

There is a good website where you can choose the style of the mail box you would like to have. I think mailbox posts are my personal favorites. They could be strategically and aesthetically located in your front gates. This reminds me of those American movies and TV series I loved to watch:-).

If I am going to deliver exactly on my fortieth week, I have 9 weeks to go from today. Yes! I am on my 31st week today.

And I don’t have an Ob-Gyn yet. LOL. If I am to deliver here in Iloilo, I have Dr. Pedro Manzala to turn to. He delivered my first son. But plans had been changed. I am to go back to Manila middle of next week with my Little Dynamo… settle a few things in New Manila for a few days (I haven’t touched some of our things since we got married, it’s high time to open some boxes and have them cleaned up!) and proceed directly to Cabanatuan to submit myself to in-laws -referred OB-Gyn. Only then will I be fully confident to stay longer in Manila to meet up with friends.

I have a lot of things to make up for this Baby Dynamo. I haven’t even prepared baby things for him yet. With his Kuya before, almost everything was bought and prepared and packed for his coming out. All we had to do was to wait…

Now, I am waiting for hand-me-downs… Little Dynamo’s things which I gave to the younger ones. It will be Baby Dynamo’s turn to use them. I guess, it’s true what they say… a mom becomes more practical after her first-born.

I have lost count of the days when we only had clouds and rain over our heads.

Today, we are blessed with a bright, sunny Saturday afternoon.
