“From several blogs I read, there are very defensive Filipinos questioning the Korean government’s current decision not to employ Filipinos as English teachers. Some are very full of angst about the Korean government’s discriminating policy. My take is, if you don’t want to be discriminated why insist on coming over?”

ABSOLUTELY!

I agree with you! Why should Filipino keep on insisting to come over if they are complaining for discrimination.

Anyway, I think, if the Philippines could have a good English Teacher, they must not have to teach in Korea. In fact the Philippines needs them and Filipino needs more time to be consider as 3rd largest English speaking country in the world because still many Filipinos could not speak English well ( www.hikot.com )

Hi. I happen to browse on this thread and I find the topic relevant to my question. I want to butt in, po :). Anyway, my question is: Are there any employment prospects for a Filipina with a law degree and no solid work experience (fresh graduate), in South Korea? I have a bachelor's degree from UP and an expected law degree from the Ateneo. I will graduate this October and take the BAR by next year.

The twist is that, I have a Korean boyfriend for four years now. We are planning to get married by next year and settle in Seoul eventually after my BAR.

I really dream of becoming a lawyer and of course practice it if circumstances permit. But for now, I'm not really sure what my prospects are in Seoul aside from teaching English. :)

Hi, My name is Gilbert, I had been teaching English here in Korea for two and a half years and I know how painful it is to discriminated being non-native English teacher. Just like arvinsign mentioned, I am one of the "accidental teachers". My major is Science, had been teaching English to Korean college students while I was in our country, Philippines. Had worked for couple of years in a call center, but I still believe that my English is not perfect. Accent is one serious thing most Koreans are concerned of, grammar is not even a primary objective to most of them who wanted to learn English. I have no problem with accent as I've mentioned, I used to work in a call center but I need to improve my teaching skills, more training to enhance my qualifications as a an English teacher.

Are native speaking English teachers better qualified to teach English than non-native speaking English teachers? Since living in Korea for more than six years, I have asked myself this question countless times. Non-native speakers of English, especially non-white Asians, face a difficult task finding quality teaching positions.

In relation to this, you may want to visit our online English academy is bases in Cebu City, Philippines. It is an institution with competent, effective, and efficient ESL teachers well-equipped to provide easy and fun way of learning English at a minimum amount of time per session.
